Thirty-five years ago, I met Dr. Farst when he interviewed me for a position at Gladys Porter Zoo, where I continue to work to this day. Over the years, I remember sitting in his office whenever I had an issue that was troubling me and him listening intently. I'm sure he had more pressing things to do, but he took the time for a talk. I have a great deal of respect for him and the things he did for the Zoo. When I informed a former staff member of his passing, she had nothing but good things to say about him and ended our conversation by saying, "we lost a good one." I agree with her sentiments. My condolences to the Farst family.

Uncle Don lived a full and vibrant life. I cherish the memories of visiting his house as a young girl of getting to bottle feed and change the diapers of a baby monkey that was rejected by its mother or getting to pet baby animals at the zoo. There was never a question that Uncle Don loved all of his family. He will be missed.

I have so many wonderful memories growing up with the Farst's. Don and Jan were my second set of parents during many fun weekends. Don had a huge heart and a life long passion for animals and knowledge. I will always draw influence from his impressive character and hope to live a life half as vibrant as his.

Don was the director at Gladys Porter Zoo when I was first hired. As an 18-year-old know-it-all, I sometimes found my way into the "hot" seat in his office. He taught me the value of not making excuses for my mistakes, but instead freely owning up to them.

He was the first person I knew who used a computer. He often worked late and I wondered how anyone could feel any sense of accomplishment immersed in documents. I was a reptile keeper back then and my work was about cleaning and feeding animals. I knew very little about the world of budgets and making ends meet so that 1,600+ animals and 100+ employees could live a healthy life.

Tonight I am at the zoo late, immersed in documents, hoping that my contributions will help 1,600+ animals and 100+ employees live a healthy life.

Rest easy, Dr. Farst. Until we meet again.

Uncle Don had a huge heart that cared for so many other “beings.” That was wrapped with a creative sense of humor and mind that always wanted to learn more. Proud and thankful to have been someone that he encouraged and inspired.
