Claudell spent many of her early years on the Casa Piedra Ranch on the Rio Grande River west of Langtry near Terrell County. She attended school in Del Rio before transferring to San Marcos Baptist Academy, where she graduated in her junior year as Salutatorian.

Much of her adult life was spent in San Antonio, where she worked for 33 years at Frost Bank, retiring in 1999 as a Vice President in the Commercial Lending Department. Claudell was active in the Business and Professional Women's Association.

After retirement, she moved to Kerrville and became a devoted member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, serving on both the Altar Guild and the Vestry. She was also extremely active in the Republican Women's Club. During these years, she was appointed by Governors Rick Perry and Greg Abbott to the Board of the Upper Guadalupe River Authority, serving three terms.

Claudell was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy and Sidney Smith; her sisters, Mary Elizabeth Smith Morris and Martha Nell Smith Carlson; her brothers, James W. Smith and Thomas A. Smith; and her in-laws, Shirley L. Smith, Bobby N. Morris, and Donna Rose Smith.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Scott E. Kercheville, and his wife, Marlise A. Kercheville, of San Antonio; her two beloved grandchildren, Emily E. Kercheville of Houston and Joshua S. Kercheville of San Antonio; and many nieces and nephews who remember her fondly as Aunt Claudie.
