Born in Pocatello, Idaho, on November 7, 1930, to Ernest Boyd Hiatt and Lola Alice Blackford Hiatt, Ernest was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A gifted athlete, he became a state champion pole vaulter while attending Will Rogers High School, earning a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma for his talent and dedication.
In 1952, Ernest joined the United States Air Force, where he served two years on active duty and an additional five years in the reserves. A skilled saxophonist, he played in the Air Force band and had the distinct honor of performing "Hail to the Chief" for President Dwight D. Eisenhower during a base visit. During his time in the service, he met the love of his life, Mary Ann Andrews. They married in November 1952 and shared 61 joyful and faith-filled years together.
Following his military service, Ernest completed his degree in optometry at the University of Houston. He practiced briefly in Amarillo before discovering his true calling as an educator. Ernest spent the remainder of his professional life inspiring young minds as a high school science teacher in Houston.
A faithful Methodist, Ernest was deeply involved in church life and remained an active member of Rotary International throughout his adult years. Upon retirement in 1991, he and Mary Ann moved to Kerrville, where they became members of First United Methodist Church. Ernest cherished their time together on their beloved "ranch," enjoying simple pleasures like feeding deer, working in his woodshop, and reading scripture with Mary Ann every morning.
A lifelong musician, Ernest continued to play various instruments throughout his life. Even after moving to Juniper Village later in life, he brought joy to others through his spirited harmonica performances for fellow residents.
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents and by his beloved wife, Mary Ann.
He is survived by his son, David Hiatt, and David's wife, Sue; and their three children, who will always carry his legacy of love, integrity, and faith in their hearts.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 9th, at First United Methodist Church in Kerrville. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by a service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be held at Garden of Memories Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First United Methodist Church of Kerrville or Rotary International in Ernest's memory.

Mr Ernie was a staple at Juniper Village... with his cane, his hat and his singing voice. I am sorry for your loss. What a great man with a great legacy. He was a resident I looked forward to seeing, looked forward to chatting with and he was certainly a charmer. I am thankful you had him for so many wonderful years. May he rest as sweetly as he lived.

I met Ernest several years ago when I started bringing him Communion from our Church. We immediately bonded. He earned a full scholarship to the University of Oklahoma for track and field, as he was the State High School Champion in the pole vault event. He also loved wearing boots, and always had a freshly polished pair on every time I came to visit him. He was a socializer, and loved talking to people. He possessed a certain charm that endeared himself to whomever he engaged in conversation. Ernest was a good man and I will miss him a lot!
