On July 4, 2025, Richard (Dick) Gillespie Eastland passed away at the age of 70. Born in Houston, Texas, on August 28, 1954, to Anne and Seaborn Eastland, Dick was a beloved husband of his high school sweetheart, Willetta (Tweety) Albritton, and the father of four sons, Richard, Britt, James, and Edward.

Dick and Tweety were married on May 30, 1975, in Houston at St. Martin's Episcopal Church. After graduating a year later from the University of Texas at Austin, the couple went directly to Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas, to work under the guidance of his grandmother, Agnes Doren Stacy, and directors Inez and Frank Harrison. There, they made their home and life together, dedicated to the physical, social, and spiritual nurturing of campers aged eight to seventeen, with kindness and goodness as their guiding principles.

Dick's love of camping was inspired at an early age during the summer months, when he visited his grandmother, Ag, at Mystic and attended Camp Rio Vista, both as a camper and a counselor. Dick and Tweety became co-directors of Camp Mystic in 1987, and over the following thirty-eight years, Dick oversaw its growth in both popularity and structural expansion. He oversaw the completion in 2020 of Cypress Lake Camp, their new camp adjacent to the original Guadalupe site.

Along with his beloved family, Dick's passions were his Christian faith and the growth and welfare of the girls of Camp Mystic. With Tweety, he considered his work at Mystic a ministry, guiding generations of campers in a love of nature, an understanding and experience of true friendship, and a deepening of their spiritual lives.

Each summer, Dick offered a fishing class, which soon became one of Mystic's most popular activities. He was most content when he was teaching campers along Cypress Creek. One of his mottos was ''Give a girl a fish, and you feed her for a day. Teach a girl to fish, and you feed her for a lifetime.''

Dick graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Business Administration, was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and a life member of the Texas Exes. He believed that the sun rose and set in burnt orange. He was an avid handball and tennis player and loved bird hunting and fishing with family and friends. Dick was also devoted to his Emmaus Bible Study group. He loved hosting family yard parties and attending his grandchildren's school and sporting events, as well as celebrating holidays with them.

Dick shared his time and leadership skills, coaching his sons' Little League baseball and basketball, and with several organizations serving the Texas Hill Country, including the Hunt School Board and the Upper Guadalupe River Authority (UGRA), as well as playing a significant role in founding the Camping Association for Mutual Progress (C.A.M.P.). He and Tweety were recent recipients of the Texoma Legends of Camping Award from the American Camp Association. He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and First United Methodist Church in Kerrville and worked with Camp Cardinal Bereavement Outreach.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents, his son, James Moulton Eastland, and his grandson, John James Eastland.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Tweety, sons Richard (and wife Leslie and their children Carolyn Clare and Peggy Ann), Britt (and his wife Catie and their children George, Charlie, and Elizabeth), Edward (and his wife Mary Liz, and their children, Edward, Andrew, Walker, and Pierce), and his daughter-in-law Lindsay Eastland of Kerrville and her children Caroline and Anna. He also is survived by his brother Stacy Eastland (and wife, Tara), of Houston and his sister, Nancy Leaton (and husband, Barry) of Brenham, sisters-in-law Anne Albritton of Madrid, Spain, Pat Harloe (and husband, John) of Dallas, brothers-in-law George Albritton (and wife Liz) of Houston, and Frank Albritton of Kerrville, and numerous nieces and nephews. ''Daddy Dicky, you will always be our hero.''

A celebration of Dick's life will be held at a later date. The family asks those wishing to express sympathy consider making a gift to Heaven's 27 Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation in memory of the precious Camp Mystic campers and counselors whose lives were lost too soon.

The Eastland family is humbled and grateful and would like to extend their deep gratitude to the First Responders, Matthew 6 Group, Navy SEALs, members of the EOC, Samaritans' Purse, Team Rubicon, Mercy Chefs, World Central Kitchen, H-E-B, Grape Juice, Lift Coffee, local restaurants, Texas DPS, volunteers, Camp Mystic alumnae, Hunt, Ingram and Kerrville ISDs, Tivy High School athletes and coaches, our amazing Hill Country community, Episcopal Relief & Development, so many ministries and churches across the nation, and countless others who gave their time and efforts so generously.

''Community is like a large mosaic. Each little piece seems so insignificant. All those little stones are brought together in one big mosaic portraying the face of Christ, and reflecting God's light in the world.''

Matthew 4:19 Jesus called out to them, ''Come follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.''

John 15:12-13 ''This is my Commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.''

This has all just been so devastating for all the heart wrenching loss incurred by all the families involved, and I just want to express my sorrow and best wishes to Tweety and the whole incredible Eastland family who has to deal with this unfathomable tragedy.

Dickie was an AMAZING cousin/boss to me, and as everyone who knew him, he was also just an INCREDIBLE man in SOOOO many ways, and this has been just so painful to handle. I know that Tweety and the rest of the Eastland family will find a way to continue sharing and expressing their TREMENDOUS love and caring for others as I’ve never known another family who has had such dedication and such a positive impact on sooooo many others!!

Dear Eastland family,

Our hearts break with you. Dick was a one of a kind human being. He helped raise us into the women we are today. He laughed with us in times of joy, held us in times of need, knew us and cared for us as if we were his own family. He was our father away from home. Words can’t even describe the impact Dick and your family has made on my life; all of our lives. He was the epitome of kindness, goodness, and joy, and we were all blessed to know him.
I send you my love, and my prayers.

With love,

Dearest Tweety and Eastland Family:

I cannot express my sadness over everything you are going through. Dick was a kind, generous man and a wonderful mentor to so many of us through the years. I was a second term camper from 1976-81 and a counselor in 1983. Those summers were some of the best of my life! I made lifelong friends and learned so many valuable things that I am eternally grateful for. Mystic was the best that life had to offer! There are not enough words to express my gratitude for everything you have done for me and my family! My sisters, niece and even my son, Andrew experienced the beauty of Mystic. In 2020 he worked with Britt on the grounds and he finally saw what a magical place Mystic is! Please know I think of and pray for all of you often! God Bless you all!

I am deeply saddened and heartbroken over the loss of Dick. I was a Mystic camper for over ten years. I grew up knowing him and Tweety as an extended part of my family. My father knew him well, they met while working at Baker and Botts in Houston. My parents always felt safe sending me to the heavenly place of Mystic, they had great comfort knowing I was safe there. Mystic will never be the same, but he was a true hero and is now our guardian angel. My deepest condolences to the entire family. Dick will forever be missed.

As a fellow youth camp director and a Pastor we closely followed the information as it was posted about the Texas flooding and those who lost their lives. Our hearts grieve for all who were affected, from the camp staff, to families of those who were lost, to rescuers whose lives have been changed forever. Our church placed 27 bottles and vases with 27 flowers and encouraged our people to take them home and pray for the family of the person whose name was tagged on the bottle. We know God is good and someday we will understand. God bless you all.

Dearest Tweety and all the Eastlands-
Words cannot begin to cover all my emotions. I remember Tweety and Dick doing a cheer routine, and him flipping you all around. I remember lining the road from the gate house all the way to the office, cheering as Dick drove you and I believe Richard, home from the hospital when you had him. My 8 years as a camper, and then as a counselor have always had ya’ll firmly planted in almost every single Mystic memory through the 70’s and early 80’s. And then my daughter, Marisa, followed as well.

Mystic, with you at the helm helped forge my spiritual foundation, of the Rock on which I stand. Our God, is an awesome God. He is El Roi- our God who sees. He sees your pain, your joy, your anguish and everything in between and He holds you in the palm of His mighty hand. I just picture Dick, with the ultimate fisherman, Jesus, fishing by a river and He is telling Dick, “well done, good and faithful servant.”

Love you.

For almost 13 summers, I had the privilege of learning and growing at Mystic. Dick holds a special place always in my heart. I remember his giggle after we gave him Harry Potter jelly beans one night in the office. I can still hear it, and it makes me smile. Being able to work in the office in the summers of 2003-2005 were years that I will cherish forever. And you loved seeing girls do something new for the first time. I remember that at the stables, you would tell me to make sure the girls get on a horse and have fun! We did that. And I hold on to each of those memories fondly. Thank you for entrusting me with so much. Thank you for being patient as you taught me new things.

Dick, you cared for all of us. You were diligent in how you cared for us. I can still hear you radioing me in the office to check the Doppler before tribe hill. You joked. You laughed. You taught us how to balance challenges with joy.

Your legacy will carry on. I hold Tweety, Richard and Leslie, Britt and Catie, Edward and ML in hearts. Thank you for sharing the love from Ag and Pop to so many girls. We are better people for having known you. Thank you for loving us.

Mystic Love,

Resilient, courageous, kind, selfless, loving, heartfelt and heroic to the end.

It was at the Rio Vista & Mystic dance in 1979 that I first met the Eastlands, Dick never changed through all these years. He is held with widespread admiration within the community and the camping industry as a whole.

I am heartbroken and stand strong in prayer and love for Tweety, Richard, Britt, Edward, their families and Camp Mystic.

Dear Eastland family, words cannot begin to express my heartbreak over the loss of Dick and the July 4 events. Please accept my most sincere condolences for the tragic loss in your family. Dick is a hero, but then again, he was always a hero at camp! He was an incredible role model, mentor, father, husband, and dad to not only his own children, but to thousands of young girls. I adored Dick! I will always remember the twinkle in his eye, his easy smile, and kindness. He just had a way about him that was authentic and relatable. He took time to take an interest in people and always made you feel like he cared about you. Dick had an amazing work ethic, pouring his heart and soul into his passion project, Camp Mystic. What a beautiful thing to see someone living God‘s purpose for their life. Well, done, good and faithful servant! I am deeply grateful to have known Dick Eastland! I am so thankful for all of my years at Mystic. My best childhood memories were at my favorite place in the world, Camp Mystic! Camp Mystic shaped my values, spirituality, the kind of friend I wanted to be, and the person I would become. I will forever be grateful to Dick and Tweety for providing this experience for me and countless others. Camp Mystic is the best of the best and will always hold the most special place in my heart. Thank you! I pray God”s peace and comfort over you as you navigate this difficult time of grief and loss. May God give you supernatural strength through your faith to trust in Him. Your Mystic family loves and supports you. We are here for you like you have been there for us all these years! I have you in my prayers! Twitty and Family,
There are not enough words or room in this space to share our sadness in
the passing of the LOVE and PILLAR of y’all’s life. I especially remember the day
we all went to Austin to watch one of the boys ( dementia is making me struggle
for the right words some days) play in the Boy’s State Tennis Championship Tourney you two just beamed.
His Heroic acts that night and morning of July 4th. Were just the norm for
Dickie Eastland - He was a “HERO” throughout his life, in so many ways, to so many individuals. Anyone that met the Eastland family members, fell in Love
with y’all!

Shannon brought her 15 yr. Old son down from Dallas to assist for four days, in the aftermaths of this tragedy. Florence was there by their sides, doing what she could as well. They both love you so much!

GOD bless you and your families and also know that ALL OF TEXAS love you and are praying for y’all!

Tweety & Family -

I am so very sorry for your loss. I am praying for you all. Praying that God would wrap you all in his warm embrace and bring you comfort and peace during this time.

I went to Mystic for several years and it was a safe haven for me, my favorite place, a home away from home, a place of comfort in a time of sorrow and transition for me, a true slice of heaven. I will never forget my time there and how much of an impact that Dick had on my life. He was a father to me when my biological father ran out on us. He taught me how to fish. He taught me how to be proud of my accomplishments. Most importantly he taught me what a man of God looks like. I will always cherish the footprints he left on my heart.

I have been making Tweety's cookies and selling them to donate the money to the relief, and the outpour has been truly incredible. You are all loved by so many people, and there are so many people who are praying for you guys.

Sending you all so much love during this difficult time. Here for you always!

I just wanted to share a few words about Dick. Everything people say about him is absolutely true — he had such kindness and a down-to-earth, folksy way that made you feel like you were talking to a favorite uncle or grandpa.

Hearing how he helped rescue those girls from the flood says so much about who he was. As a Boy Scout, I loved camping and always felt bad that the girls didn’t have the same chances for those kinds of adventures. Creating those opportunities at Camp Mystic is special — it matters.

This loss feels even closer to home for me because my own neighborhood near Sandy Creek lost lives in the July 4th flood. People like Dick remind us there’s still so much good in the world, especially in the hardest times.

I hope people keep telling what Dick did that day — how he put his own life at risk to help others. He was one of many heroes whose quiet courage made all the difference when it mattered most. Those stories deserve to be remembered and shared, so we never forget the strength and kindness shown in the hardest moments.
