Thomas William McKeon
11/21/1958 - 12/11/2025
Thomas “Tom” William McKeon, age 67, of Kerrville, Texas entered into eternal rest on December 11, 2025, after a 9-month battle with Glioblastoma (brain cancer).
Tom was born in Washington D.C. on November 21, 1958, to Thomas John McKeon and Alice Louise McKeon née Bush. He was born into a loving family which grew to be a full home, with Tom as the eldest of five children, followed by four younger sisters.
Tom grew up in the Maryland suburbs of Washington D.C. where he attended high school at Georgetown Preparatory School. Following high school, he attended Loyola University in Baltimore, earning a Bachelor of Arts in History, then Georgetown University, earning a Master of Arts in Russian Area Studies. While in school, Tom was an active athlete, playing rugby, football and wrestling, as well as achieving the honor of Eagle Scout. After graduating, he began working for the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, MD, engaging in “classified” work as a civilian intelligence analyst for the Department of Defense. In 1985, he met his future wife, Sara, while they were working as young professionals in D.C.; they quickly fell in love and married in October 1987.
In 1990, Tom and Sara moved to Stuttgart, Germany for Tom’s work (NCEUR - Patch Barracks) where they traveled extensively throughout Europe and nearby areas and in 1993, welcomed their son, Kevin. In late 1994, Tom and Sara pivoted careers to move back to the states and began working in property management alongside Sara’s parents at L. Duff Enterprises in Kerrville, TX. In early 1995, they welcomed their daughter, Kelly. As a devoted father, Tom could often be found supporting and cheering on his children - be it attending Boy Scout camp outs, video taping sporting events or teaching them to drive.
During his 30+ years in Kerrville, Tom was an active member of both Notre Dame Catholic Church - where he attended weekly mass alongside his children while they were students at Notre Dame Catholic School, and Zion Lutheran Church - where he served on various volunteer teams including the building committee for the new sanctuary in 2001. For the last 14 years, Tom enjoyed studying God’s word as part of the Kerrville men’s group of Bible Study Fellowship. Additionally, Tom found time to participate in numerous civic and professional organizations including Rotary Club and the San Antonio Apartment Association.
Tom and Sara were known for their shared passion of travel and adventure, which took them and their children to some of the most unique and interesting places the world has to offer - notably, crossing off Antarctica for the family’s seventh and final continent together in December 2013, and visits to the Grand Canyon - hiking Rim-to-Rim twice and rafting within the canyon on the Colorado River. Following Kevin and Kelly’s departure for college, Tom and Sara took full advantage of their “empty nester” status to take on new travel challenges, which included exploring all 63 U.S. National Parks (which they completed in 2023 with American Samoa), visiting all 13 Presidential Libraries and Museums, and completing numerous week-long bike trips across Europe, Cuba and the U.S. (including Pittsburgh to DC along the GAP and C&O canal). Tom’s hobby of genealogical research often intersected with his travels, leading him to find ancestors’ Irish baptismal records in 1990 and eventually attend Mass in 2024 at the very church where his great-grandparents worshiped in Ireland. Over his 67 years of life, Tom visited all 50 states and over 100 countries, and was continually in awe of the beauty of God’s creation.
A steadfast, loving, and patient man, Tom possessed an inquisitive spirit that fueled his lifelong passion for history and travel. He was, above all, defined by his deep and abiding love for Jesus and his family. His steady, calming presence and jovial nature were a gift to his family and friends and will be dearly missed. The memory of his beautiful smile, twinkling blue eyes and firm handshake will stay with us forever.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Sara (Duff) McKeon, and their two devoted children: Kevin McKeon and his wife Cami of Houston, TX; and Kelly (McKeon) Cirioli and her husband Mitchell of Houston, TX. He leaves behind three cherished granddaughters: Lucy, Abigail, and Hannah McKeon, all of whom adored their “Poppy.” He is also survived by his sisters: Mary Alice Drewer of Encinitas, CA; Christine (Jim) Hawes of Ellicott City, MD; Melody Speaker of Washington, D.C.; Kathleen (Dave) Glassman of Bethesda, MD; as well as his brother-in-law Mark (Beth) Duff; in addition to ten nieces and nephews, their spouses and children. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Alice McKeon; his brother-in-law, Scott Speaker; and his nephew, Dylan Lawn.
The family is immensely grateful to the specialized medical teams who assisted Tom in his courageous battle against Glioblastoma, particularly the staff at M.D. Anderson in Houston and the comforting care provided by Peterson Hospice and various caretakers in Kerrville.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Zion Lutheran Church, 624 Barnett Street, Kerrville, TX 78028 with Pastor Bobby Vitek and Father Michael Boulette participating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the National Brain Tumor Society, Christian Assistance Ministry, Peterson Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
