Mary Anne Haning

With faith in God’s promise of eternal life, we celebrate the life of a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was called home to be with the Lord after a life well lived in service, love and adventure.

As the proud spouse of an Air Force pilot, Mary Anne embraced a life of travel and faithful support of her husband throughout their journey together, beginning in 1955 in S.C. Over the years the family would be stationed in Savannah, GA; Washington, DC; Wiesbaden, Germany; San Antonio, TX and Altus, OK. During this time, she would often give time to “feed her soul” by serving with the American Red Cross, the Officer Wives Club, and eventually as a dental assistant in oral surgery. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and commitment, spanning 67 beautiful years filled with shared memories, sacrifice and unwavering devotion. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, (Ret.) Lt. Col James Reese Haning, with whom she will eventually join in eternal peace at Arlington National Cemetery.

Mary Anne found great joy in the simple blessings of life, especially time spent near the water.

Growing up as a tomboy she played basketball, softball and volleyball in high school and could waterski while barefoot. Relaxing meant casting a fishing line around Kerrville with her best friends also named Mary Anne. It was a daily routine she cherished to appreciate the beauty of God’s creation and the fellowship of loved ones. Her adventurous spirit and witty sense of humor touched all who knew her.

Above all, she was a woman of faith who believed in serving others. First serving as the manager of a Safe House for women and children in Oklahoma, and offering religious education at The First Presbyterian Church, Altus, OK. Returning to Texas, she would serve at the Methodist Church in Kerrville, as well as the Bandera and Kerrville chapters of The Order of Eastern Star, as a Worthy Matron. Her grace and quiet strength shone brightly as a beacon to her friends and family.

Mary Anne is lovingly remembered by her younger sister, Joyce Galbraith of Surfside South Carolina, three daughters, Karen Cummings of Union, Missouri; Ramona Hodgkins of Bartlett, New Hampshire; and Jan Kemp of Leander, Texas; her cherished six grandchildren and treasured nine great-grandchildren, of whom the youngest is her namesake, plus several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter Georgia Anne, whom she held close in her heart throughout her life; and her dear parents, Rev. George W. Guy and Una Thompson Guy, and her younger brother, George Arthur Guy.

Though deeply missed, her family takes great comfort in knowing she is reunited with her husband and loved ones in the presence of our Lord. Mary Anne’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her, and her life is a beautiful reminder of the power of faith, family and the endurance of love.

The family also wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the devoted team at The Haven at San Gabriel and Magnolia Hospice for their compassion, patience, and support in providing comfort and dignity in Mary Anne’s final days.
