John David Huffaker was born December 4, 1953 to Roy and Ann Huffaker and took his final breath on August 25, 2022. At the time of his birth, Roy and Ann were living on the Y.O. Ranch on the Divide. David's fondest childhood memories were when he lived on Rancho Real in Leakey shadowing his grandfather, Hap.

David grew up breaking and training horses, a knowledge he shared with anyone willing to learn. He shared his passion for training cutting horses with his two sons.

His greatest joy in life were his children. He put their needs above anything else. Being self-employed allowed him the freedom to be with his children when they got home from school. Frequently, he would take his children out on jobs where they learned life skills and strong work ethics.

David also was a man of strong faith. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior while still in school. As a single father, he brought his children up in a Christian home living by example.

David was a generous man giving of himself and his possessions when asked or when he saw someone in need. Material possessions were of little consequence to him.

Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his four children, Emily Woods and husband Thomas, David James Huffaker and wife Rebekah, John Huffaker and wife Bailie, Gabby Huffaker and her partner Matthew Palacio. He is also survived by his grandson, Liam David Woods; brother, Gene Huffaker and wife Dene; and sister, Frances Nix and husband Jerry.

He was preceded in death by his father; mother; and sister, Billie Huffaker.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Gates of the City, 410 Benson Dr., Kerrville, Texas.

"In 1965, when I was an 11 year old boy we moved to the Mississippi Delta town of Leland, Mississippi, where my daddy was the new Methodist preacher. I started the 6th grade there and in my class was a skinny kid with blue jeans, snap pocket shirts, a huge belt buckle, cowboy boots, a Texas Hill Country accent, and the unusual name of David Huffaker. We became friends. He knew all about horses and ranches and I loved talking to him.
His father was handling quarter horses for a Mr. Baker, a rich cotton planter there in Leland (another Texan, Johnny Winter, once lived in Leland, too). I think the Huffakers moved by to Texas before I started the 7th grade.

Flash forward to 1985. I'm married, and my wife and I are driving back to Mississippi from an outdoor writers' conference in Phoenix, Arizona. We stopped somewhere east of Sierra Blanca and up to an old store with a bread sign on its door that advertised barbecue for sale. Beside that door was a poster that read, "Cutting Horse Competition: Contact David Huffaker." Well, I wrote the number down, but it was ten years before I called him. I don't think he remembered me, but we talked a bit. He was living in Austin, then, I think. At any rate, I was telling this story to a friend in Fort Worth and she must have googled the name because she sent me this link. I am so sorry to read this. And I wanted his children and relatives to know what a great boy he was in 1965 and 1966. But I'm sure they figured that out already. God bless you all."
