Lydia Joy Hawkins, 91, went home to be with her Lord on October 24th, 2023. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joy was born in Galveston to Harry and Lydia Stelter on February 18th, 1932. She married the love of her life, Dr. Theron C. Hawkins on August 29th, 1952 in Houston, Texas.

As you read this, know that she is out of our presence and resting in the loving arms of Jesus. She is more alive now than she ever was. For there are no more tears, no sickness, no pain and no more worries. She is surrounded by her loved ones and friends who have gone on before her and are welcoming her to her Heavenly home.

Lydia Joy Hawkins was preceded in death by her husband, Theron Hawkins.

Her proudest achievements include her children, Denine Patterson, husband David; Brad Hawkins, wife Lisa; Maria Burge, husband Walt. Her grandchildren who lovingly called her ‘Precious’, Aaron Patterson, wife Kelly; Danny Hawkins, wife Christy, Ragan Patterson, wife Sarah; Kevan Hawkins; Star Fiori, husband Bradley; Taylor Hawkins. Her great grandchildren, Colby and Kailey Davis, Leighton and Eleanor Patterson, Jack Chappell, Riley Fiori, many foster children and many nieces and nephews. She loved and cared for 26 foster children and took great joy in serving The Lord at Trinity Baptist Church in Kerrville for over 60 years. She also served for many years on the Board at Alto Frio Baptist Encampment in Leakey. She lived up to her namesake and was both Precious and a Joy to us.

From Joy:

“I want to tell you all how very much I loved you and was so blessed to have had you in my life. Thanks for being mine. Do not grieve for me, I have gone to my Heavenly Father and am home with Him now. So I will see you all there later. Be with Jesus dear hearts, for I will see you there.”

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, November 20th at 1:00pm at Trinity Baptist Church in Kerrville, Texas.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, Christian Medical and Dental Association San Antonio, or Alto Frio Baptist Encampment in Leakey.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Brandi, Liz, Juanita, Jamie, and Josie of Alamo Hospice for their loving care and guidance through this time.

"Denine and Brad:

Your Mom’s Memorial Service was a reunion among many wonderful things and I ended up not getting to personally say hello and express my sympathy and condolences to you all. And still missed another Funeral and was late helping a friend of a friend get to a doctor’s appointment. But I have always asked about you through your parents when I saw them. And I appreciated your Dad coming to my mother’s service.

I had not seen Karen since TBC in the 60s but kept up with her through Edgar. And intermittently thought of “Mataae” (not sure of spelling) from the 60s but memory or time never allowed me to ask your Mom and Dad about her. But certainly hope everything went well.

And my Mom and Dad met at Alto Frio. My Dad, from Virginia, was stationed at Uvalde Army Air Field in WW 2 and went to services at Alto Frio at night, on leave, or on weekends and met Mom.

It certainly appeared at the service that some musical genes and heritage got passed down. Besides enormous amounts of training and practice. I really enjoyed that.

So warm regards and my sympathy.

Robby Hurt"

"Denine and Brad and family,

With mixed emotions of sadness and joy, our hearts are sending you love and thoughts. Mama Joy was an incredible lady. We will miss her but have a wealth of memories with which to remember her by. We know that she's so happy where she is, with Theron, and all her family and friends, and with Jesus. Her Christianity, joy of life, and wisdom was shown every day of her life in so many ways. We were all blessed to have known her.

With much love and thankfulness for sharing her with all of us...

Michael and Holly"
