John Stephen ‘Jack’ Mecham stepped into the next life on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at age 96. He was born February 29, 1928, in Austin, Texas to J. Lloyd and Mabel Mecham. He received Jesus just a couple of days before passing, thanks to an employee at the facility where he lived.
From an early age, Jack loved the Hill Country of central Texas and studying ‘critters.’ This led to becoming a noted Herpetologist and professor at the University of Tulsa, Auburn University and Texas Tech, before retiring to Kerrville, TX. His research was extensively published and included discovery of several new frog species.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lois Mecham; first wife, Robbie Louise Mecham; and second wife, Lyrlene Johnson Mecham.
He is survived by son, Robert (Steve) Mecham; daughter, Nanette Mecham; grandson, David Mecham, his wife Kim and their children Annabel, Jack, Owen and Reagan; grandson, Chad Mecham, his wife Leesha and their children Eva and Farrah; grandson, Michael Mecham and his wife Laura; stepdaughters, Jana Sharpley, D'Anna Johnson Carcamo and Jennifer Stinnett, plus their families.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville, TX.
