Larry Russell Harris, 77, of Harper, passed away on August 10 in Harper, Texas. He was born in Asheville, North Carolina to Betty and William Harris, Jr. on April 3, 1948.

He graduated from Spring Woods Senior High School in Houston, Texas. He worked in sales for a wine company for several years but his true passion was working as a hunting guide in Alaska, as he loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and taxidermy, and even worked on large exotic animals. He also enjoyed working to restore two 1930 Model A cars.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and had a prestigious career in the Navy where he proudly served his country in many different capacities. Larry was involved with the local Honor Guard and had proudly participated in hundreds of veteran memorials.

As an animal lover, he took pride in breeding and raising South African Boerboels, as well as other breeds of dogs. Later in life, Larry enjoyed his retirement by spending time with close friends swapping lots of stories, volunteering and taking care of his property and his dogs, who never left his side.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and William Harris, Jr. and his sister, Marissa Harris Fahnert.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Brad Jones of Valley Center, Kansas; his son, Russell Harris of Pensacola, Florida; his granddaughters, Hannah and Lauren Jones; his grandson, Nathan Harris; and his nephew and wife, Brad and Vicki Fahnert of Houston, Texas.

A celebration of life will be held at Billy Gene’s in Kerrville on Thursday, August 14 at 6 pm. Funeral services will be held at later date at Fort Sam in San Antonio.

Memorials may be sent to Hill Country Veterans Center/Hill Country Honor Guard of Kerrville or Kathleen Cailloux Humane Society of Kerrville.

The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to Grimes Funeral Chapels and all of the countless Veterans that played a huge part of Larry’s life.

"I met Larry when I was a deputy with the Kerr County Sheriff's Office back in the late 90's; whereas he was an enjoyable man to listen to his stories of hunting, etc...Larry was also one of my favorite customers when I managed the sporting goods department at Gibson's Discount Center. Sorry to hear of his passing, but may he rest in peace. God Bless his family!!"

"Larry was on the board at the Cailloux Humane Society for many years for his love of animals. He helped in all fund raisers and visited the animals all the time. We just saw him about 2 months ago when he came to visit the dogs. We all will miss him and all the stores he was so happy to tell you. Prayers to his family for comfort and strength at this time."
