Charles Moore Key, 43, of Harper, Texas, went home to be with Jesus on March 8, 2026, at his home, after bravely battling heart disease and kidney failure. Charlie was born April 21, 1982, in Bryan, Texas, to Dr. John and Suzanne Key.
He attended Tivy High School and graduated from the Arizona Culinary Institute in Scottsdale. He married Rohde Barnett on October 15, 2024, in Fredericksburg, Texas.
As a chef, he worked at numerous high end hunting ranches and restaurants and spent many years working in the Texas oil fields. For the past five years he worked at Finns Rescue Ranch in Harper, where his compassion for dogs and all animals was evident—Charlie often brought home strays and had a true heart for rescue work.
Charlie was passionate about his sobriety and his recovery journey. He was involved with La Hacienda in Hunt and was an alumni of the Sozo Home in Kerrville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rohde Key; grandparents, R.E. and Mary Key; Judge James Herbert and Esther Moore; and Russell Hawkins; and uncle, Tom Pick.
Charlie is survived by his parents, Dr. John and Suzanne Key; his sister, Marianne Key and nephew Caleb Key, all of Harper; his aunt, Mary Lynn Pick of Plano; Uncle Jim and Aunt Joanne Moore of Seattle, Washington; cousins Collin, Patrick and Natalie Moore and their families of the Seattle area; and Danny Pick of Plano.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville, Texas, with Pastor Ruben Saravia and Juan Flores officiating. A reception will follow immediately at Impact Christian Fellowship, 2031 Goat Creek Road, Kerrville.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the Sozo Home for their love and support, to Juan for his mentorship, to Chris for always being there to listen, and Dr. Joel Bennett for his friendship and his shared loved for Charlie’s animals.
