Warren Ferguson was born April 04, 1939, in Corpus Christi, TX, to Marion (Ferg) Ferguson and Frances Finley Ferguson. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Judy Ferguson, daughter Dena Ferguson Jenkins (Rene’), step-son Troy Martin (Rhonda), grandsons Zach Martin (Paige), Hudson Martin (Jamie), Duncan Jenkins, Lyon Jenkins (Isabel). He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Richard Finley Ferguson.
After his family moved to San Antonio, Warren attended and graduated from Alamo Heights High School. He then attended the University of Texas in Austin, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and graduated in the first class of Aerospace Engineering. Warren also obtained a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from Southern Methodist University (SMU).
Then began a career that took him all over the world. After a few years with the Boeing Corporation working on space rockets, he moved to Texas Instruments (T.I.) to help develop the infra-red technology and other military materials during the Vietnam War era. He went undercover during the war to test many of these new technologies in the field.
After heading the Washington D.C. office for T.I. for three years, Warren felt the call back to Texas. He took over his father’s business, Ferguson Map Company, in San Antonio, and promptly began to update the methods of creating maps from hand-drawn to computer-generated. He expanded the business quickly to include cartographic services, a printing company, and retail Map, Travel, and Luggage stores in San Antonio and Houston.
Never to let “any grass grow under his feet,” Warren sold that successful business and began the life of a consultant. One of his first clients was Smallworld Inc., a company based in Cambridge, England, that was pioneering in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. Warren successfully took the company public in the U. S. and soon became its Chief Executive Officer. With offices around the world, Judy and he became world travelers.
In 2000 the company was acquired by General Electric. Warren continued to work as a GE executive until his retirement in 2005. During these years the Fergusons built their dream home in Kerrville, TX, where they both became involved with Schreiner University, Warren serving as the chairman of the board of trustees.
Following retirement Warren became a Texas Master Naturalist, volunteering every Sunday evening at the Old Tunnel Bat Cave outside Comfort, TX, and stewarding the land at his beloved ranch at Sisterdale, TX. He shared his vast business knowledge by mentoring numerous former employees, teaching in the Business School of Schreiner University, and serving and leading many non-profit organizations in Kerrville—Museum of Western Art, Symphony of the Hills, Peterson Hospital Foundation, Schreiner University.
Warren died a peaceful death in Austin, TX at the age of 87 after years of battling Alzheimer’s disease. The family is grateful to the staff of Longhorn Village for their outstanding care. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church--Kerrville, TX, September 5, 2026, at 2:30 pm.
